Over the past three years, the San Marcos area has seen a rise in catalytic converter theft. According to San Marcos Police Department Detective Casey Tennant, San Marcos has recorded at least 301 catalytic converters thefts between Jan. 1, 2019-Feb. 3, 2022.
Previously, SMPD hosted an event Saturday that focused on catalytic converter theft prevention and on Monday two San Marcos CARTS transit service routes were temporarily suspended after thieves stole 10 catalytic converters from buses.
