Five military service members from Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland were arrested over the weekend on charges of aggravated sexual assault stemming from an incident in Hays County.
According to jail records, Mauricio Chaparro, age 28; Kyle Tuschmann, age 19; Anthony Cooney, age 21; Kenneth Johnson, age 20; and Dominick Burns, age 20, were booked into the Bexar County Jail on Saturday. Each man faces four counts of aggravated sexual assault, a first degree felony. Bond was set for $125,000 for each count.
“This is a sexual assault case that is pending prosecution,” San Marcos Police Chief Chase Stapp said in an email. “It occurred in May of 2018 in San Marcos. The San Marcos Police Department investigated it and sent the file to the D.A. for review.
“It appears that the D.A.’s office presented the case to the grand jury and had the men indicted, and they were recently arrested in San Antonio,” Stapp continued. “Since it is a pending case, we will not be able to comment on it further. It is not related to the recent serial rapist case.”
A Hays County Grand Jury indicted the five men on April 24. According to the indictments, the men are accused of “intentionally and knowingly” acting together “during the course of the same criminal episode” against the same victim. District Attorney Wes Mau said he could not comment further on the case. According to Hays County Jail records the men had not yet been transferred from Bexar County as early Monday afternoon.
