If you attended the 44th Annual Heritage Home Tour you experienced a few new fun things to do during the event.
This year, the Heritage Association of San Marcos started a “hunt” to find things in each home on the tour, as well as a silent auction, local artists selling their fabulous work, a Martha’s Sale Tag Room for great bargains and a Treasure Chest Drawing at the Designer Show House.
Dr. Rosina Ruiz Valle filled out a card and dropped it into the treasure chest during the tour. It pays to participate. Dr. Valle’s name was drawn and she won a treasure chest filled with fabulous gifts donated by the Crystal River Inn and other San Marcos businesses.
During the Heritage Home Tour, 13-year-old Kaila Adams, a seventh-grader at Miller Middle School, took time to photograph every hidden “hunt find” in each home, organized by the tour. Her zealous participation funneled through the hundreds of visitors to the home tour committee and won her a one-year complimentary membership to the Heritage Association of San Marcos — making her the youngest HASM member. She was also given a treasure chest filled with some summer river float fun gifts for her efforts.

As a National Honor Society recipient, Adams vision is clear on more than photography. She is thinking about her future. The Heritage Association of San Marcos is hopeful she can spread the word on preservation and history to bring a new generation of members to a nonprofit organization that was chartered in 1975 to support the preservation of buildings and to carry on traditions that beautify and enrich the cultural and community life of the city.
“What better way to bring in the next generation of historians and preservationists than to have an ambassador under the age of 14,” HASM Membership Chair Renee Graham said. “A HASM Student Member Recruitment Activity is planned for July, all in thanks to Adams.”
Graham said HASM’s mission of preserving local history could not be done without the community’s continued support.
“Thank you, San Marcos and our many hill country towns, for participating in the 44th Heritage Home Tour. Without your support, HASM could not continue our mission to preserve buildings and to carry on traditions that beautify and enrich the cultural and community life of this city,” Graham said.
