The plans for a new city hall is tied into a revitalization project for a portion of Hopkins Street, and the city of San Marcos is looking for applications to serve on the steering committee.
The Hopkins City Center Steering Committee will provide guidance and feedback on the city’s upcoming project.
“The current city hall was built in 1975,” City Manager Stephanie Reyes said. “Our community continues to grow, and the City of San Marcos organization is growing along with it. We are looking forward to creating a facility that will allow us to meet current and future needs and serve as an inviting space our community will be proud to visit.”
During the Sept. 17 meeting, the San Marcos City Council directed staff to form a committee that reflects the entire community. It will include members of the City Council and representatives from groups including local non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and nearby neighborhoods.
“This is a significant step forward for this transformational project,” Mayor Jane Hughson said. “The committee we appoint should represent everyone in San Marcos and ensure everyone has a voice in the process as we move forward.”
The Hopkins City Center Steering Committee application is available online in English and Spanish at sanmarcostx. gov/boardsandcommissions. The deadline to submit an application is Oct. 22. City Council is expected to consider appointments at their Nov. 6 meeting.
“We’ve been planning this project for several years and the City Council confirmed their desire to move forward in February 2024,” Reyes said. “We’ve really outgrown our current space and are excited to create a civic corridor for everyone to enjoy. We’re endeavoring to incorporate environmentally focused features, community spaces, and local art to create a welcoming atmosphere that encourages us to be more engaged and connected with the community we serve.”
A comprehensive planning study is currently underway to determine the amount of space needed to accommodate current and projected future staff growth. Next steps will include land planning and evaluating potential public-private partnerships to redevelop the site of the existing San Marcos City Hall. Members of the community will be invited to provide input and suggestions throughout the process as the project moves forward.
