Once again, KZSM 104.1 FM/KZSM.org proudly features local talent and creativity with an exciting new show. Saturdays from 10 to 11 p.m., “The Lit Mix” serves lit vibes, new tracks and fire sounds.
Lovely Jaycee, host of “The Lit Mix,” is no stranger to the art of curating the perfect playlist.
'I love the name. It just kind of came to me,' she said of her show's title.
Ever since she was seven years old, Jaycee has been crafting mixtapes, starting with recording radio songs on cassette tapes using her boombox. As technology evolved, she embraced the CD era, burning custom mixes of underground tracks that weren’t yet on the mainstream radar.
Her early passion for finding hidden gems in music earned her admiration from her school friends, but it wasn’t until years later that she found the recognition she deserved. When she met her husband, DJ Alpha, their mutual love for music bonded them. Jaycee began assisting him with song selections and, in 2013, learned how to DJ on Technics 1200 turntables. She fell in love with the craft and started joining her husband at gigs.
'He once told me I had a gift for song selection,' she recalled.
Though Jaycee has always struggled with stage fright, she took a major step forward in 2024 when she was hired to DJ on the app BIGO Live. With an audience of 600 viewers for her first set — and eventually 2,000 — her confidence grew because she could DJ comfortably from home. As a mother of three boys, she could balance her passion for music with her family life.
When she learned the community radio station she serves as a board member needed new shows, Jaycee took it as a sign to bring her love for DJing to a wider audience. Now, through “The Lit Mix,” she hopes to introduce listeners to her eclectic taste and personal favorites, blending trendy hits with the underground tracks that defined her early years. Listeners might hear Ja Rule, Billie Eilish, Peso Pluma or dozens of other performers, both famous and underground.
“I play it all.”
While she doesn’t see herself as breaking barriers for women, she’s proud to represent her station alongside her husband as a DJ power couple.
'If what I’m doing inspires other women to step out of their comfort zones, then that’s even better,' she said with a smile.
