SAN MARCOS EDUCATION FOUNDATION
San Marcos Education Foundation honored six new distinguished alumni ranging from graduates as far back as 1967 to as recently as 2007.
The newly crowned Distinguished Alumni include Evelyn Brister, Nicholas Costilla, July Holbrook, Catherine Stoughton, Don Mauldin and Jason Smith.
DR. EVELYN BRISTER SMHS CLASS OF 1988 Brister is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Rochester Institute of Technology in the College of Liberal Arts. Brister’s research focuses on innovative approaches to environmental conservation, such as using biotechnology to rescue endangered spe- cies and coral reefs.
NICHOLAS COSTILLA SMHS CLASS OF 2007 Since 2014, Costilla has served the citizens of Hays County through the Criminal District Attorney's Office where he serves as the Misdemeanor Legal Assistant Supervisor.
JULY HOLBROOK SMHS CLASS OF 1984 Holbrook is the founder of the local San Marcos nonprofit The Mermaid Society. Holbrook is an environmental steward and strives to collaborate with arts, culture, entrepreneurship and environmental interests to protect the San Marcos River.
CATHERINE STOUGHTON SMHS CLASS OF 1993 Stoughton was part of the 1992 State Champion Lady Rattler Basketball team. She has dedicated 27 years to the education profession as both a math teacher and coach. 23 of her years have been as a Rattler, here in San Marcos CISD. When she is not coaching or teaching she can be found playing the trumpet in the San Marcos Artist and Retention Orchestra.
DR. DONALD ‘DON’ MAULDIN SMHS CLASS OF 1967 Honored posthumously, Mauldin graduated with honors in 1967. Mauldin was a dedicated orthopedic surgeon for fifty years. During his career, he excelled at his profession with integrity and passion. Mauldin passed away this past April.
JASON SMITH SMHS CLASS OF 1981 Smith attended San Marcos public schools from first grade until his graduation in 1981. He then attended and graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1985. Jason is a recognized leader in the freight industry and has mentored several young professionals, provided advisory assistance and financial backing to young entrepreneurs who exhibited the same attributes he learned as a Fighting Rattler.
