KZSM: Introducing Two Volunteers You Might Not Hear

Many of the dedicated volunteers who produce KZSM 104.1/KZSM. org host their own shows, but others work behind the scenes. Their expertise and interest create our unique identity as the voice of the community we serve.

Chris Gardner sits on the board of the San Marcos Community Radio Association and serves as chair of the Programming Committee. With the help of the committee, he seeks out new programs, reviews proposed programs, sets guidelines for hosts and helps coordinate the schedule. For Chris, “there’s little as thrilling as helping a new host realize their vision and get their show on the air.”

A passion for communication comes naturally to Chis, who has spent many years teaching English, sharing his love for literature with advanced high school students.

“The more we hear from each other, the more we understand each other,” he said. “Airing a diversity of voices makes a richer and more connected community.”

Unlike long-time San Martian Chris Gardner, Benn Kobb arrived here just last summer, bringing with him years of interest and expertise in broadcasting. He provides essential assistance with technical matters and invaluable help and advice on complying with Federal Communications Commission regulations. He also shares his extensive experience in website management and public emergency communications.

Benn served as a teenage volunteer at KPFT in Houston in the 1970s, but his time there ended abruptly when the station was bombed, twice, and taken off the air for months. The perpetrators were caught, but the young volunteer was left with a profound conviction “that citizen access to the media needs protection and should not be taken for granted.” This dedication to community radio continued through his long career and now benefits KZSM.

“I am privileged to be associated with this unique San Marcos institution,” he said.

Radio remains a billion- dollar business, Benn pointed out. While it’s not true that people no longer listen to radio, many people “are tired of bland, celebrity-focused corporate radio and politicized, rage-farming radio that capitalizes on division and discontent. KZSM in contrast, appeals to those who want to hear about local events and hear local artists. That is especially how KZSM stands out from the many radio alternatives in our area.”

Whether, like Benn, you have radio expertise you’d like to share, or, like Chris, you want to extend your knowledge into something new, your help would be welcome at KZSM! Visit our website to learn more.
