San Marcos Record to publish 3 days a week

SMDR

San Marcos Daily Record will transition to a three-day-a-week publication schedule starting Dec. 1 as part of a new digital-first editorial strategy.

“This change has been discussed for years,” Mandy Farrow, publisher of the San Marcos Record, said. “It’s not about delivering less; it’s about delivering better. This strategy allows us to adapt to how our readers consume news while continuing to uphold our standards for quality journalism.”

As the news industry evolves, so too must local journalism. The Daily Record is embracing this change to meet readers’ expectations in today’s fast-paced digital age.

“I want to be clear, readers will be getting the same amount of news over a week as they do right now,” Dalton Sweat, regional editor, said. “We are not cutting back on journalists or on space. We are simply changing the frequency in which we print the physical newspaper.”

The move to a digital- first approach means stories will now appear on sanmarcosrecord.com as soon as they’re ready, rather than waiting for the next print issue. This change ensures readers have access to timely, upto- date news coverage throughout the week.

“Today, news consumers expect to read the stories they care about when it happens, not the next day,” Sweat added. “This transition will allow us to meet our customers’ expectations and provide the community with more timely and dynamic news coverage.”

The new print schedule will focus on publishing larger editions on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Each issue will feature an increased page count to include all the news readers rely on, ensuring nothing is left out.

As part of the transition, all print subscriptions will include a free digital subscription, giving readers unlimited access to daily news updates online. Additionally, subscribers’ print delivery schedules will be adjusted to ensure they receive the same number of issues they initially paid for by extending each subscription.

“All subscriptions will be extended so that every subscriber will get the same amount of print issues as they originally paid for,” Farrow confirmed. “We are committed to proving to our readers that this transition will result in a better product for everyone.”

This is a proactive approach to preserving and strengthening the Daily Record’s place in the San Marcos community. By combining the reliability of print journalism with the immediacy of digital delivery, the San Marcos Daily Record is poised to thrive in an ever-changing media landscape.

“We’ve been covering the San Marcos community for 112 years, and we plan on being here for another 112,” Farrow said.
