THANKSGIVING DAY
Texas Roadhouse is partnering with Operation Turkey to provide turkey dinners for anyone in need today. The program welcomes individuals or families who sign up online or through someone involved in the organization. Proof of income is not required — anyone who says they need a meal is eligible.
“Whether you have family or don’t, if you need a turkey plate, we’ll bring one to you,” said Karen George, a long-time volunteer with Operation Turkey.
Operation Turkey relies on volunteers to make it happen. Tasks include deboning smoked turkeys the night before, assembling meals Thanksgiving morning, and delivering plates to homes. Volunteers can show up at Texas Roadhouse as early as 7 a.m. today to help. The work typically wraps up by noon, leaving plenty of time to enjoy Thanksgiving with family.
“We need drivers, kitchen helpers, and anyone willing to pitch in. It’s a rewarding way to spend your holiday,” George said.
Karen’s participation in the program began as a tribute to her late father, who welcomed anyone in need to the family table. After her father’s passing in 2004, she and her mother partnered with Jesse Ruiz, founder of Operation Turkey, to continue the spirit of giving.
“My mom and I started this to honor my dad. Even after my mom passed away in 2020, I’ve kept going with Operation Turkey because it’s such a meaningful way to give back,” George said.
Last year, Operation Turkey served up to 2,000 meals, and organizers expect to do the same this year. Meals will be delivered across Kyle, Buda, Niederwald, and even as far as Luling for those who sign up.
If you’d like to help, arrive at Texas Roadhouse before noon. Donations, cooking assistance and delivery volunteers are all welcome.
Meals will be delivered throughout the morning.
“Operation Turkey is more than just serving food — it’s about community, compassion, and making sure no one spends Thanksgiving hungry,” George said.
Ruiz said they are planning to feed 2,000 people this year with the help of over 100 volunteers.
“We deliver hot turkey meals to those in need in San Marcos and surrounding areas and are entering our 13th year! Due to inflation, our costs have gone from $2.50 to $3.50 per meal, which is significant given that we plan on feeding well over 60,000 folks nationwide,” Ruiz said, adding that they really appreciate monetary donations as well.
