Texans face old foe Cuero in the regional semifinals

WIMBERLEY VOLLEYBALL

Wimberley will meet a familiar foe in the third round of the playoffs as the Texans square-off with the Cuero Gobblers.

Wimberley enters the game with a 10-2 record while Cuero enters with a 9-3 record.

The Texans are led by quarterback Cody Stoever. Stoever has passed for 2,117 yards and 25 touchdowns for the Texans while rushing for 1,132 yards on 156 carries and 21 touchdowns.

The Gobblers are led by the duo of Dayvon Varela and Walker Dietze. Varela has rushed for 1,044 yards on 167 carries and nine touchdowns while Dietze has caught 69 passes for 1,160 yards and 18 touchdowns.

This is the 18th all-time meeting and 9th playoff meeting between Wimberley and Cuero with the series history dating back to 1994.

In recent history, both the Gobblers and Texans have clashed for supremacy in Region IV of 4A Division II with the winner taking home the regional title. Since 2016, Wimberley and Cuero will have played eight times in the last eight years including playing twice during the 2021 season.

In the last meeting between the two teams, Wimberley and Cuero met in the state semifinals of the 2022 season. Engaging in an offensive shootout inside the Alamodome, the Texans knocked off the Gobblers 42-36 and advanced to their first state championship since 2019.

Kickoff for Wimberley and Cuero is set for 7 p.m. tonight at UFCU Stadium in San Marcos.
