Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler and Chief Mike Davenport are retiring. To honor their remarkable careers and celebrate their retirement, the Hays County Sheriff’s Office will host a celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, December 19th at the Hays County Public Safety Building, located at 810 South Stagecoach Trail. All are welcome to join. Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler was elected and sworn into office in November 2010. With an accomplished law enforcement career spanning over 50 years, he had prior service in various capacities at the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. Sheriff Cutler also had 11 years of management and executive-level experience before his role as Sheriff. Under his leadership, the Hays County Sheriff’s Office now employs approximately 500 civilian and commissioned staff. A native Texan, Sheriff Cutler grew up in the small community of Hutchins. He graduated in 1973 from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. His law enforcement journey began in 1974 with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, where he rose to the rank of Captain. During his tenure at TCSO, Sheriff Cutler held various roles, including jailer, uniformed patrol officer, fugitive warrant/mental health deputy and criminal investigations detective. As Captain, he led the Investigation and Process Division, overseeing narcotics, evidence, crime scene investigations, SWAT, courthouse security, the training academy, victim assistance programs and the Criminal Investigations Division. He retired from TCSO in December 2000. In 2001, Sheriff Cutler joined the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, where he served as a sergeant in the Major Crimes Division before being promoted to Lieutenant. In this role, he managed crime scene investigations, evidence handling and victim assistance services. He continued his career as an investigator with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission from 2004 until his election as Hays County Sheriff in 2010. Joining Sheriff Cutler in retirement is Chief Mike Davenport, who has dedicated over 30 years of service to Hays County. Chief Davenport spent his entire career with the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, beginning in the jail and rising to the rank of Chief of the Sheriff’s Office.
