Anyone who has spent an afternoon on the riverbank, taken a stroll through a park or green space or shopped the businesses lining the downtown square might already think San Marcos is a beautiful place. Now, it’s official.
The city of San Marcos was recently certified as a Bronze Level Scenic City by the nonprofit organization Scenic Texas. Inspired by the leadership of former first lady Lady Bird Johnson, the organization is dedicated to preserving and protecting the scenic beauty of Texas and empowers citizens and communities to safeguard the unique and vibrant landscapes that make Texas special.
To be considered for recognition through the program, city of San Marcos staff compiled information, photos and data to submit as part of a thorough application that evaluated everything from San Marcos’ streetscape to its parks, trails and public spaces. The city’s efforts were scored against the best practices set by the Scenic City program.
San Marcos Community Enhancement Initiatives Manager Amy Thomaides put everything together so that San Marcos could be considered for the certification, but the designation recognizes the work of several city departments, including Planning & Development Services and Parks and Recreation.
“I’m proud of how all the departments work together to create a community with function and beauty,” Thomaides said. “This award is a representation of how each department contributes to a beautiful city.”
When it comes to the beauty of San Marcos, it’s not just about the scenic sights, but also the people who make it what it is. Beyond infrastructure and programs, the award is also a testament to the staff in each department who take pride in the community they serve and work hard every day to make it a great place.
“I love the San Marcos community,” said Thomaides. “I’ve lived here over 30 years and enjoy every aspect — the rivers and natural areas, residents and city staff.”
Thomaides and other staff members are combing through the judges’ feedback and plan to implement suggestions where possible. With the certification, joins the ranks of beautiful cities in Texas, including Fort Worth, Sugarland, Houston, Irving and San Antonio.
