This year the San Marcos River Foundation is celebrating its 40th anniversary of working to ensure that this beautiful river remains healthy and flowing for future generations.
SMRF will have its Annual Members Meeting and Anniversary celebration on Feb. 1 at the Paulina Espinoza Recreation Hall from 2 to 5:30 p.m., where members will hear from our Keynote Speaker, Ben Masters, a wildlife documentarian and conservationist and director of Deep in the Heart: a Texas Wildlife Story. The meeting is open to the public SMRF’s early years were spent educating the public and local officials on the unique ecological features of the river, sponsoring river clean ups and trying to obtain major water rights to protect instream flows. Its most recent successes involve conserving sensitive recharge lands to protect spring flow, creating a contiguous greenbelt loop around the city of San Marcos, pushing for better wastewater treatment standards and continuing its River Rangers water quality monitoring program and invasive species removal.
