‘Take it From Nature’ to take over TXST gallery

TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY

Opening on Jan. 21, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., “Take It From Nature”, a group art exhibition curated by Syd Perkinson, will kick off the new year in Texas State University Galleries’ Flex Space. Featuring the works of 25 Texas State University-affiliated 2D and 3D artists, the exhibition highlights creations deeply connected to or inspired by nature and the natural world.

“Take It From Nature” encourages viewers to closely observe and find inspiration in their sur- roundings. To embody this theme, the exhibition includes an interactive component. Plant propagations from Perkinson’s house plant collection will line the Flex Space gallery, inviting visitors to draw inspiration from them — quite literally draw their inspiration — take the plant and leave the drawing. By leaving a drawing and taking a plant, gallery visitors are making the title “Take It From Nature” all the more literal.

The exhibition runs from Jan. 21 to Feb. 2, offering plenty of time for visitors to experience the artwork and engage with the interactive elements. The gallery hours are as follows: Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday to Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment. To make an appointment, email rlm273@txstate. edu.

This exhibition originated from a Flex Space open call, and Perkinson was eager to contribute as it marks their final semester at Texas State University before graduating with a BFA in Studio Art and a teaching certification. So, Perkinson made their own Call for Art, and with the selected submissions, “Take It From Nature” came to be. With a deep appreciation for San Marcos’s rich connection to nature and art, Perkinson wanted to create a show that celebrates its beauty and inspires the community.
