SMHS GIRLS BASKETBALL
The No. 22 ranked San Marcos Rattlers clinched a playoff berth after beating Hays County rival Buda Johnson 69-39 to sweep the series against the Jaguars.
The Lady Rattlers improved their overall record to 21-6 and their district record to 7-1. San Marcos will also qualify for the playoffs for the fourth time in the past five seasons.
The Lady Rattlers opened up the first quarter on fire, outscoring the Jaguars 21-9 to take a commanding lead going into the second quarter.
Buda Johnson responded with a strong second quarter and cut San Marcos’ lead down to 33-26 as both teams went into halftime.
The Lady Rattlers responded by holding the Jaguars to 13 points in the second half as the San Marcos offense once again heated up, leading to the 69-39 win.
Junior small forward Azariah Fennell led the team in scoring with a game high 29 points followed by senior point guard Ezra Tobias with 14 points. Junior power forward Melayna Perkins was third with 12 points while sophomore point guard Reliegh Good was fourth with 11 points.
Fennell led the team in rebounds with seven and steals with five while Tobias led the team in assists with five.
Lady Rattlers remain in second place in the District 29 standings.
Due to San Marcos being the second smallest school in the district, the Lady Rattlers are positioned to be in the Division II bracket with the introduction divisional split for the playoffs high school basketball.
The Lady Rattlers will be back on the road Tuesday against East Central before returning Friday in the final home game of the season against the No. 1 ranked Judson Rockets.
