Bobcat comeback falls short against ULM

TXST WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Texas State’s third quarter comeback fell short on Saturday, falling to the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks 74-66.

The Bobcats drop their overall record to 9-10 overall and 3-6 in conference play while battling several key injuries to the team.

“With the changes in our roster and with the injuries, [we] made some decisions on how we wanted to play and what we wanted to do,” Head Coach Zenarae Antoine said. “We defi- nitely saw big chunks of some success with that. What we needed to do better was doing a better job of controlling defensively the looks that they were getting.

“From an offensive standpoint, I felt there were a lot of really good things that we were able to do. We didn’t make a lot of shots early and did a poor job at the free throw line early, but got that corrected, came out of halftime understanding that and did a really good job fighting back.”

The Bobcats took the early lead following a three pointer from sophomore guard Ja’Mia Harris but before the Warhawks took the first lead with less than eight minutes in the first quarter.

Texas State attempted to retake the lead in the period but were held back by ULM. Going into the second quarter, the Warhawks led 21-16.

ULM opened the second quarter on a 12-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at 33-18.

The Bobcats made their comeback and were able to cut their deficit down to single digits, entering halftime down 38-29.

Texas State continued their comeback with a monster third quarter performance, outscoring the Warhawks 21-10 in the period.

The Bobcats took their first lead since the first quarter after senior power forward Jaylin Foster hit a three-pointer to put Texas State up 45-44.

Going in the fourth quarter, Texas State led 50-48. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, it was the last time Texas State held the lead.

ULM opened up the quarter on a 13-2 run to lead 61-52. The deficit was too much for the Bobcats to overcome, ending in a 74-66 loss for Texas State.

Foster led the team in scoring with 22 points followed by Harris with 15 points. Graduate senior guard Destiny Terrell was third in scoring with 10 points and led the team in rebounds with eight.

Texas State returns to play Thursday on the road against Southern Miss.
