Calaboose presents Black History Month at the Cephas House

CALABOOSE AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MUSEUM

February is Black History Month, an annual celebration honoring Black history, culture and community that recognizes the achievements as well as the ongoing struggles of Black Americans. Understanding Black history is integral to understanding the history, issues and future of the country.

The Calaboose African American History Museum is proud to host the following in-person events honoring Black History Month. All events are free and take place at the historic Cephas House (across the street from the Calaboose Museum) at 217 Martin Luther King Drive.

The schedule of events is as follows:

• Saturday, Feb. 1 from 1 to 3 p.m. — Being Black in San Marcos: Discussion facilitated by Dr. Dwonna Goldstone

• Saturday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — National African American Read-in: Facilitated by Diana Garcia

• Saturday, Feb. 15 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. — Oyster Creek Community: A San Marcos Freedmen Colony by Bobbie Shaw

• Saturday, Feb. 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. — History of the Mitchell Center on its 30th Anniversary by Kyev Tatum

• Thursday, Feb. 20 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Food Power Politics: The Food Story of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement by Professor Bobby Smith II

• Saturday, Feb. 22 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. — Contributions to the Building Trades by Enslaved Craftsmen by Benjamin George

• Saturday, Feb. 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. — A Concise History of the African Methodist Episcopal Church by Rev. Sheila Sidbury-Thomas For more information about the events visit calaboosemuseum.org or email info@calaboosemuseum. org.

The Calaboose Museum, in San Marcos, is an institution dedicated to representing the heritage and experiences of African Americans in Hays County. The Calaboose shines a light on the people of Hays County that might otherwise remain unknown. From the great basketball player Lucious Jackson to blacksmith Ulysses Cephas, the Calaboose tells the stories of Hays County African Americans.
