Large development on council docket

Large development on council docket

A five- to seven-story student housing development proposed for the block of Guadalupe Street between San Antonio Street and Martin Luther King Drive will be the subject of a public hearing and a decision at tonight’s San Marcos City Council meeting.

Council will hold a public hearing to receive comments for or against a resolution approving the conditional use permit for the project. Council is then slated to vote on the resolution. The 75 Sylvan development would have had 171 units with 545 bedrooms and 0.75 parking spaces per bedroom, with a fee-in-lieu of parking payment of $844,600 to the city. The proposal for the 75 Sylvan project failed in the Planning and Zoning Commission late last month, where a public hearing drew largely negative commentary from residents.

In other business, council will consider a resolution adopting the Community Development Block Grant Action Plan for Program Year 2019. The plan allocates federal funds to local organizations and projects that benefit the community. Community Initiatives Program Administrator Aaron Harris told council recently that HUD is giving the city $680,998 for the program year — an increase of 4.5 percent over the funding received for Program Year 2018. Southside Community Center receives funds for its housing rehabilitation program, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) receives funds for its work with children, and the city often receives funds for projects such as parks improvements.
