The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Audubon Texas, an organization dedicated to conserving and restoring natural ecosystems with a focus on birds, wildlife and their habitats, have designated San Marcos as a Bird City Texas community. This prestigious certification, awarded to only 11 cities since the program began in 2020, highlights San Marcos’ commitment to creating a thriving environment for birds, wildlife and people.
Earning this certification required the city to meet rigorous criteria focused on habitat protection, threats to birds, education and engagement, and sustainability. San Marcos demonstrated its commitment by maintaining bird-friendly native landscapes, removing invasive species, expanding green spaces and trails, and supporting alternative transportation. Additionally, the city has hosted a Migratory Bird Day Festival since 2021 and continues to provide educational programs that encourage conservation efforts among residents.
“Achieving the Bird City Texas designation is a significant accomplishment for our community and demonstrates the collaborative effort, hard work, and commitment to supporting bird conservation, education, and outreach,” Director of Parks and Recreation Jamie Lee Case said. “Our staff and community partners have dedicated considerable effort toward this honor, and we are ecstatic to have attained this designation.”
Located along the Central Flyway migration route, San Marcos serves as a critical stopover for migrating birds and is uniquely positioned at the convergence of several ecoregions, providing diverse habitats that support a wide range of bird species.
“Research shows that bird-friendly habitats increase property values, help control insect populations and boost tourism,” Discovery Center Specialist Niki Lake said. “From urban centers to rural towns, every community plays a vital role in conserving bird populations while enhancing quality of life for residents.”
As spring approaches, San Marcos will celebrate its certification with a series of events including, an official Bird City Texas Designation Ceremony, the Great Backyard Bird Count and a Migratory Bird Day Festival.
