Texas State won their first game of the season, defeating the San Diego Toreros 2-1.
The win improved the Bobcats overall record to 1-1.
Despite the lack of offense, Head Coach Ricci Woodard was still proud of the team for pulling out the win.
“I don't think we're even close to [what we become] offensively,” Woodard said. “So to still be able to pull out a win tells me that we're gonna be able to become a great team when this is all said and done. We just gotta get in our groove and find it.”
The Bobcats were powered by their pitching rotation from junior Emma Strood, a transfer from LSU, and sophomore Madison Azua.
Strood earned her first win of the season, throwing five innings and allowing five hits, one earned run and striking out three batters.
“It means a lot,” Strood said. “I'm glad that we came back from the Arkansas [loss] because it was a close game so I'm glad we were able to get our first win of the season. I'm glad we had Madi behind me to help close it out.”
Madison Azua earned her first save of the season, throwing two innings and allowing just one hit, no runs and striking out two batters.
“They're a great one-two punch right now,” Woodard said. “I haven't even gotten the rest of our staff in yet. I'm excited to see what all of them are gonna do for us. I just feel like those two have matched up the best so far, so we'll see what tomorrow holds.”
The Bobcats were able to capitalize offensively in the bottom of the second inning.
After a one-out single from sophomore third baseman Kate Bubela, junior catcher Megan Kelnar connected with a RBI double into center to score Bubela from second.
Following a two-out single from junior left fielder Sydney Harvey to put runners on the corners, the Bobcats struck again.
Harvey stole second but an error on the throw from home to second missed the target, allowing Kelnar to score from third.
Despite leaving a runner on third to end the inning, Texas State led 2-0.
San Diego added a run in the fifth but were unable to tie the game in the seventh.
Texas State will play a doubleheader to close out the Texas State Tournament on Saturday, battling Lipscomb at 2:30 p.m. before playing Bradley at 4:45 p.m.
