TXST WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Texas State fell in their conference home game against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 68-60.

Despite a career scoring night from freshman Saniya Burks with 22 points, the Bobcats were plagued with 22 turnovers that Coastal Carolina turned into 20 points. Head Coach Zenarae Antoine was disappointed with both the result and the Bobcats struggle with turnovers that overshadowed both Burks’ breakout performance and the team celebrating senior Destiny Terrell surpassing 1,000 career points.

“Our Achilles heel has been turnovers, and that was the game again,” Head Coach Zenarae Antoine said. “It’s turnovers. We had seven at halftime; it was back and forth. … I don’t like it from that standpoint that it’s [supposed to be] a time to celebrate another student athlete hitting her thousandth point mark and then our youngest student athlete who just had a real good breakout game for her really showing the full range of what she’s capable of doing. “It’s tough when it falls on a loss, especially a close one. The close ones hurt.”

In the first quarter, the Bobcats and Chanticleers traded the lead back and forth where neither team held a lead larger than two points.

Following a layup from senior forward Morgan Hill, Texas State led 1413.

Coastal Carolina responded with a 7-0 run and entered the second quarter up 20-16.

In the second quarter, the Chanticleers pushed their lead to 27-20 as Coastal Carolina looked to enter halftime up by a massive margin.

However the Bobcats had a response. Texas State went on a 9-2 run, helped out by three consecutive three pointers from Burks. With less than a minute remaining in the game, the game was tied at 29-29.

Coastal Carolina took advantage of an intentional foul by Texas State, hitting two free throws and entering halftime up 31-29.

The Chanticleers took an early 34-33 lead in the third quarter but hot shooting Bobcats once again made another impressive run. Three pointers from sophomore guard Ja’Mia Harris, senior forward Jaylin Foster and Burks created a 9-0 run for the Bobcats who took their largest lead of the game at 42-34.

Coastal Carolina responded with a 10-2 run and retook the lead at 4644. The Bobcats were able to answer back but now entered the fourth quarter trailing 49-48.

The Chanticleers went up 54-50 only for the Bobcats to answer with a 5-0 run to retake the lead at 55-54 following another three-pointer from Burks and a layup from senior guard Destiny Terrell.

Unfortunately for the Bobcats, it would be the last time Texas State held the lead. Coastal answered with an 11-1 run and now led 65-56. The deficit was too much to overcome for the Bobcats as Coastal went on to win 68-60.

Burks led the team in scoring with 22 points followed by Harris and Foster with 11 points each. Terrell led the team in rebounding with 12.

Texas State returns home Saturday against Western Michigan as part of the Sun Belt-MAC challenge.
