Rattlers defeat Judson to tie for first place

SMHS BOYS SOCCER

The Rattlers grabbed an important home district win this past Friday, beating the Judson Rockets 2-1.

Head Coach Coronado Reyes was proud of the team for overcoming a slow first-half start and recovering to clinch the important win.

“We started off a little bit slow,” Reyes said. “But in the end, we came on that second half, and we fought through the adversity. They did a really good job and scored a quick two goals in three minutes, so they got the job done.”

Despite their miscues, the Rattlers rebounded and returned to their style of play in the second half, which San Marcos took advantage of.

“We were just missing the small things that we normally do,” Reyes said. “We let them take us out of our normal game. In the second half, we played more of our game of possession. Being able to maintain control of the ball and getting opportunities on goal.”

Max Guzman and Alvaro Garcia scored the two critical goals in the win as San Marcos improved their record to 4-8-1 overall and their district record to 2-1-1, leaving the Rattlers tied for first place.

District 29 has been a battle night in and night out with every team in the district having either a loss or a tie.

After tying East Central 1-1 on Tuesday night, Reyes was proud of his team for their ability to overcome the loss and focus on getting the win.

“They’re both tough, and this district’s really extremely tough,” Reyes said. “I looked the other day, and we’re all kind of all over the place. Everybody’s lost their one or tied. So this is not an easy district, and then the Bi-District round is not any easier.

“But it really does speak volume about the heart that these guys have and the character that they have to overcome a 1-1 tie, which we shouldn’t have tied. To overcome that then come out here and pull out this victory in the second half speaks of their character.”

San Marcos will be on the road Tuesday against Cibolo Steele. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
