Sierra tosses no-hitter in Rattlers season opener

SMHS SOFTBALL

Junior pitcher Adelaida Sierra pitched a no-hitter in the season opener as San Marcos defeated the New Caney Porter Spartans 8-2 at the Brenham Classic.

The Rattlers put runners on first and second in the top of the first inning after A’Kyiadd Spillers reached base on a Porter error and Emalyn Martinez drew the walk.

Sierra scored the first runs of the game, hitting a two-run RBI double to give the Rattlers the lead at 2-0.

In the next at-bat, Arianna Flores connected with a RBI double into center field to score Sierra and extend the lead to 3-0.

Porter answered back in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on a hit batter before a Rattler fielder error allowed the runner to score.

After the first inning, San Marcos led 3-1.

In the fourth inning, Flores connected with a leadoff infield single to start the Rattler at-bat. After moving to second base on a passed ball, Flores scored on Emery Cisneros infield single to extend the lead 4-1.

Addison Castillo hit a single into center field to put runners on the corners before Cisneros took advantage of an error on the catcher, pushing San Marcos’ lead to 5-1.

Porter answered back by scoring a sacrifice bunt after the Rattlers committed two fielding errors. But back to back strikeouts from Sierra ended the scoring threat as San Marcos entered the fifth up 5-2.

Martinez started the inning with a leadoff single into right field before being brought home on a Sierra RBI triple.

San Marcos later added two more runs in the sixth inning. After loading the bases, Martinez hit an RBI single to score a run before Porter got the out at third base.

Sierra knocked in another run for the Rattlers, hitting an RBI double to make it an 8-2 game before Porter could get out of the inning.

Sierra ended the sixth inning on three straight strikeouts to seal the win at 8-2 before the game was called.

Sierra threw a complete game, throwing six innings while allowing no hits, no unearned runs, two walks and striking out 13 batters. Sierra was 3-4 from the plate with two doubles, one triple and four RBIs.

Flores was also 3-4 from the plate with one RBI while Martinez was 2-3 from the plate with one RBI and one walk.

San Marcos later played the Wylie Pirates but fell short in a 6-3 loss.

The Rattlers will continue play throughout the weekend at the Breham Classic. San Marcos will return home Tuesday night against Buda Johnson in the first home game of the season and the district opener for both teams.
