TXST SOFTBALL
Texas State defeated New Mexico 6-2 to complete a perfect 6-0 record at the Bobcat Tournament.
A clean sweep of the tournament improves the Bobcats overall record to 8-2 for the season.
“When you can come out and play the sixth ball game and give up a run early in the first inning, I’m like, okay, this is gonna be interesting to see which way we go,” Woodard said. “I love the way we responded. That’s what I’ve told them all weekend. I love the way they competed.”
TEXAS STATE RUNRULES FORDHAM
The Bobcats started off their Saturday with a dominating win over the Fordham Rams 8-0.
Starting pitcher Emma Strood threw a complete game, allowing just two hits, no runs, no walks and striking out eight-batters.
Sophomore third-baseman Kate Bubela and junior first baseman Aiyana Coleman hit both hit home runs to put the Bobcats up 3-0.
“Confidence for me is key,” Coleman said. “
It’s a big thing but I’d have to keep working out obviously all the time. [I’m] seeing the ball a lot better. It is helping me and just staying consistent.”
Texas State then scored five runs in the sixth inning to complete the win and seal the shutout out at 8-0.
TEXAS STATE SHUTS OUT NEW MEXICO
The Bobcats completed their second shutout of the night, beating the New Mexico Lobos 3-0.
Starting pitcher Madison Azua threw a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits, no runs, one walk while striking out eight batters.
“If you don’t give up any runs, it’s gonna be easier just to win ball games,” Woodard said. “We did a pretty good job all the way around on the mound and defensively today. [Just] keeping ourselves in a spot to win ball games.”
Coleman hit her second homerun of the day, blasting a solo-shot over the wall in the second inning.
Texas State later tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning.
BOBCATS COMPLETE THE CLEAN SWEEP.
Texas State closed out the tournament with a 6-2 win over the Lobos.
Strood earned the win for the Bobcats, throwing six innings and allowing just five hits, one earned run, one walk while striking out eight batters.
“[Karmyn Bass] was really working for me, so I felt I was throwing my best stuff,” Strood said. “She was really working to get the umpire to see what I was throwing too.”
Woodard has been pleased with her pitchers over the past two tournaments with their ability of attacking the plate.
“The best thing about our pitching staff is they attack the zone,” Woodard said. “Emma’s hard to umpire. I’ve had to stand out here and try to do it myself. She lives around the zone, so every ball she throws is pretty close to [strike zone where batters have to choose,] ‘Do I have to swing or not swing?’ That’s what makes her successful.”
After trailing 1-0, the Bobcats scored six unanswered runs to seal the win.
