TXST MEN’S BASKETBALL
Texas State defeated the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks 80-63 in a dominating performance that saw the Bobcats out-rebound the Warhawks 55-24.
The Bobcats and Head Coach Terrence Johnson improved their overall record to 14-14 and their conference record to 7-8.
Capitalizing on a 15-1 run to start the game, the Bobcats put the foot on the gas pedal before rolling into the win.
“When you’re playing a double header, sometimes you don’t get it as much time as you would normally get in your normal routine,” Johnson said. “So you’re always wondering, what’s it gonna take for you to get going. From the very start, I thought we got quality looks, and I thought we turned defense into offense.
“When we’re doing that, we’re all right. They have the freedom, and I want them to play with pace. I want them to get out and showcase their athleticism and their skill set. I thought that we were able to do that early on.”
Senior forward Tyrel Morgan, playing in his first home game in nearly a month and finished with 15 points, was happy to be back on the court and playing in front of the Bobcat faithful.
“It’s a speechless moment,” Morgan said. “I’ve been kind of struggling just to stay healthy, and through the process of recovery, just being out there and starting to get back to myself is a really good feeling.”
Christian Turner also finished with 15 points along with a team high 10 rebounds to complete his first career double-double.
Adding emphasis on rebounding, second chance points and cutting down rebounds, the Bobcats were able to wear down the Warhawks en route to the win.
“We harp on, ‘You practice how you’re going to play,’” Turner said. “So you pick up all your bad habits. We’ve really been emphasizing rebounding, getting second chance points, cutting our turnovers down and we displayed that because we’ve really been harping on it over the past couple of games.”
Texas State returns to play against South Alabama Saturday.
