Library to update Circulation Management System, temporary impact to operations

Some San Marcos Public Library operations will be temporarily impacted as staff prepare to launch a new circulation management system, which began the week of February 17. The Polaris Automation System will improve efficiency and access to services for both staff and library patrons, supporting expedited checkout and return processes and providing easier access to the library’s catalog.

The system features a user-friendly catalog that will allow patrons to browse all of the library’s available materials in both print and digital formats, with customizable tools that provide patrons opportunities to explore the library’s offerings and reserve or renew materials online. Patron information for existing catalog users will be automatically transferred to the new system. Patrons will not need to create a new account.

The platform is expected to streamline circulation management and procurement for library staff, and support expansion as the library acquires new materials or develops new services. Library staff can automatically notify patrons when materials are overdue or newly available, which enhances communication and service delivery to patrons.

“The San Marcos Public Library has used the same integrated library system for more than twenty years,” San Marcos Public Library Director Diane Insley said. “We are excited to roll out this update and provide our patrons with a flexible, modern, and user-friendly tool that allows them to access the resources they need and make the most of their library experience.”

The temporary interruptions to library operations will allow for staff training and updates to computers at the facility.

On Feb. 27, the library will be closed as the circulation management system is implemented and library staff is trained. On Feb. 28, operations will resume as normal.

On March 3, patrons will be able to access the new system through the San Marcos Public Library’s existing catalog website by visiting mysmpl. org. The catalog can also be accessed using the catalog link on the San Marcos Public Library homepage at sanmarcostx. gov/library.

The Polaris Automation System was designed by Clarivate Innovative Interfaces and purchased using American Rescue Plan Act funding allocated to the city of San Marcos. The system features user authentication, access control and encryption to enhance data security.
