San Marcos Academy invites the public to attend “The Addams Family Musical” opening Thursday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m. at the Robinson Christian Center. Additional showings of “The Addams Family Musical” are Friday, February 28 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

When The Addams Family comic was first published in 1938, no one could have predicted that this mysterious family would still capture our hearts (and terrify us) nearly a century later. Charles Addams created this kooky, creepy family as a parody of the American ideal, and at first glance, the Addams family is nothing but a bunch of oddballs. They revel in the macabre and have a very interesting definition of fun. But look a little closer, and his tight-knit family might actually be closer to the ideal than we may at first assume.

In this musical, dark and gloomy Wednesday Addams falls in love with Ohioan Lucas Beineke, and the parents are coming for dinner. Anyone would be shocked to show up for dinner at this kooky house in Central Park with no furniture, a moat, a zombie maid and someone dating the moon. The Beinekes, with their unique breed of normal, are especially disturbed by the "creeped out weirdos."

But what starts as a disastrous evening becomes a transformative night for all. The characters realize that even the most unlikely interactions can help them become more fully themselves when they embrace who they truly are. What could have torn families apart instead brings them closer, but only when they decide to extend grace, forgiveness and acceptance to one another, quirks and all. In doing so, they learn to live life to the fullest.

While the Addams family’s eccentric personalities provide plenty of laughs, they also offer an important lesson: no matter how dark our lives may seem, there is always joy and light to be found in the way we love and care for each other.

Tickets are $10 per adult and $5 per child and can be purchased at bngn.blackbaud.school/?id=rer1xlxes3i#/home.
