The number of measles cases in Gaines County continues to climb as an outbreak plagues the West Texas region, according to state officials on Friday. Unrelated to that outbreak, Austin officials also reported its first measles case in 24 years Friday afternoon.

Since January, the number of reported measles cases has reached 146 in the West Texas outbreak. Twenty people have been hospitalized, as of Friday, and an unvaccinated school-aged child has died from the disease. State officials reported Tuesday that the cases had spread as far as the northwestern tip of the Panhandle.
