SMHS BASEBALL
The Rattlers won their first district game of the season, beating their Hays County rivals Buda Johnson 3-1.
San Marcos improves their overall record to 5-2 and their district record to 1-0.
The Rattlers scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning. With Cole Wiatrek on second base and two outs, Elijah Ramirez hit an RBI single into center field to score Wiatrek, giving San Marcos a 1-0 lead.
San Marcos added another run in the top of the fourth inning. Following a leadoff triple from Colson Geesee who was then pinch run for by Nate Velasquez, Jyuan Alonso hit a sacrifice fly into left field, scoring Velasquez to extend the lead 2-0.
Buda Johnson answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning, hitting an RBI to cut the lead down 2-1.
But in the next at-bat, the Rattlers again made it a two-run lead. With the bases loaded, Andrew Wilson forced the bases loaded walk, scoring a run and making the score 3-1.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Rattlers ended the game by sitting the Jaguars in order to seal the win.
Starting pitcher Jack Vasquez threw a complete game, allowing just three hits, one earned run, five walks and striking out nine batters.
San Marcos is back home this weekend for the first time this season for the SMHS Tournament. The Rattlers host rival Seguin Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before taking on Arlington Sam Houston at 7:45 p.m. The Texans are coached by former San Marcos baseball player Elijah Perez.
