TXST MEN’S BASKETBALL

Texas State’s season came to an end Thursday night as the Bobcats fell to the Old Dominion Monarchs 64-61 on a game-winning three-pointer with second remaining at the Sun Belt Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The Bobcats finish the season with a 16-16 overall record and a 9-9 conference record.

Texas State fell behind Old Dominion in the first half 19-7 before the Bobcats made their comeback. After trailing by 12 points, the Bobcats made it a one-point game at 24-23 following a three-pointer from Coleton Benson with less than five minutes remaining in the first half.

Texas State later tied the game at 27-27 after a layup from sophomore Kaden Gumbs then took their first lead of the game at 29-27 going into halftime after a pair of free throws from senior Joshua O’Garro.

The game soon turned into a competitive back and forth with both the Bobcats and the Monarchs trading the lead back and forth. With less than a minute in the game, Old Dominion led 60-59.

The Monarchs tacked on a free throw to extend the lead 61-59 with 14 seconds remaining in the game. However on the next possession, the Monarchs fouled Benson with eight seconds left of the clock to send junior to the free throw line. Benson hit both free throws to tie the game at 61-61.

While the game looked to go into overtime, Old Dominion had other ideas. The Monarchs hit a game-winning three-pointer with one second remaining to seal the win at 64-61.

Senior Tylan Pope led the team in scoring with 15 points followed by O’Garro with 11 points. O’Garro also led the team in rebounds with 10 to complete the double-double. Gumbs was third in scoring with 10 points.
