New workforce training facility

CITY OF SAN MARCOS

The city of San Marcos hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of an expanded space that supports workforce training in the community. The renovated facility is located in the city hall complex and will house workforce training courses through a partnership with Austin Community College and Community Action, Inc. of Central Texas.

Beginning in April 2025, ACC will provide courses in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning, through its Skilled Trades Program. Additional courses in automotive maintenance, plumbing and welding are expected to follow at the facility. Community Action, Inc.

of Central Texas will cover the course fees for eligible students using funding from the Texas Workforce Commission’s Adult Education & Literacy Program.

ACC began offering HVAC courses at the San Marcos Public Library in early 2023. In December 2023, the city council approved an initial three-year lease with ACC for the new dedicated workforce training space to expand opportunities available to the community.

“The city of San Marcos is committed to closely matching the skills of our community members with the evolving needs of our local economy,” City Manager Stephanie Reyes said. “This expanded workforce training space allows us to provide access to targeted, in-demand skills that empower residents to secure meaningful employment and directly address the workforce needs of our local businesses.”

The expanded workforce training space was previously used by the city’s fleet division, which relocated to the Public Services Center on McCarty Lane. Renovation work, completed in October 2024, included electrical and lighting upgrades funded by the American Rescue Plan Act.

This expansion underscores the city’s commitment to providing accessible, high-quality workforce training that supports economic growth and community development.

“We are thrilled to expand our workforce training capacity,” said Director of Administrative Services Hayden Migl. “The success of the HVAC class at the library over the past two years shows the value of these programs. This new space will help us meet growing demand and offer more opportunities for skills development.”
