SMPD warns of phone scams

SAN MARCOS POLICE DEPARTMENT

A recent San Marcos Police Department facebook post stated that scammers are targeting community members from all walks of life, including college students, retirees and professionals.

“They may claim you missed jury duty or have a warrant and demand payment,” the post stated. “Do not fall for it.”

The post warned to not be susceptible regardless of if:

• The caller ID shows a law enforcement number

• The caller has personal info about you or your family

• The caller sounds urgent or makes threats Law enforcement will never:

• Ask for money over the phone

• Demand Bitcoin or wire transfers

• Request payment in gift cards If one gets a call like this, hang up and report it to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
