The Bobcats earned a critical series win on the road, beating the rival Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns 4-3 in the series finale.
The win improves the Bobcats overall record to 15-16 overall, 6-6 in conference play and sit two games behind first place.
“Just a really gritty effort on the road to win a big road series for this team,” Head Coach Steven Trout said. “A big week with three road wins and a great job of finding a way to win. It wasn’t perfect, but we competed and I see this team starting to believe. Phenom- enal week of throwing the baseball and playing defense while there is another big week ahead for this team.”
After the Cajuns took the first game 2-0 while the Bobcats won the second game 2-0, both teams entered Sunday looking to take the series in the rubber match.
The Cajuns struck first, hitting a solo home run in the top of the first to go up 1-0. However, the Bobcats answered back in the top of the second.
Senior catcher Austin Munguia connected with an RBI single into left-center field scoring designated hitter Ian Collier at third to tie the game. In the same at-bat, sophomore first baseman Justin Vossos hit into a double but scored senior Alan Shibley at third, giving the Bobcats a 2-1 lead.
Later in the sixth inning, Shibley hit an RBI single up the middle and extended the lead to 3-1.
The Cajuns answered back in the same inning. Scoring on an RBI double and a wild pitch, the Cajuns tied the game at 3-3.
Following two scoreless innings, both teams entered the ninth inning still tied at 3-3.
Shibley forced a leadoff walk but the Bobcats then hit a groundout to the pitcher before striking out, giving Texas State two outs.
Down to their last out, the Bobcats used their late game magic. Facing a 3-2 count, freshman Zachary Gingrich hit an RBI triple, scoring Shibley and giving the Bobcats a 4-3 lead.
The Cajuns tried to answer back in the bottom of the ninth inning but were unable to bring home both the game tying and game winning runs as Texas State took home the win at 4-3.
Pitcher Carson Laws took home the win, improving his record to 2-0. Laws pitched through 3.1 innings allowing just two hits, no earned runs, two walks and striking out six batters.
The pair of wins against the Cajuns broke a ninegame losing streak against the border rivals while the Bobcats won their first road series against their longtime nemesis since 2021.
Texas State will be back on the road Tuesday night against the Baylor Bears. The Bobcats will look to avenge their loss to the Bears earlier in the season when Baylor won 19-3 in seven innings. The road showdown will be the 81st all-time meeting between the two schools.
First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Baylor.
