Rattlers sweep Canyon in district road win

SMHS BASEBALL

The Rattlers completed their sweep of the rival New Braunfels Canyon Cougars, winning 8-6 last Friday.

The win improves San Marcos’ record to 20-7-1 overall and their district record to 8-3. Following Buda Johnson’s sweep of Cibolo Steele, both the Rattlers and Jaguars are tied for second place in the district.

The Rattlers struck first in the top of the first inning. With runners on the corners, junior catcher Colson Geesee hit an RBI single into center field to put San Marcos up 1-0.

Geesee later struck again for the Rattlers in the top of the third inning. With the bases loaded, the junior connected with a three-run RBI triple into center field, clearing the bases and extending the lead to 4-0.

In the top of the fourth inning, sophomore Andrew Wilson scored another run for San Marcos, hitting a RBI single. In the next at-bat, junior Landon Munoz hit another Rattler triple into center field, scoring two more runs and pushing San Marcos’ lead to 7-0. Munoz later scored on a passed ball as the Rattlers entered the bottom of the fourth inning up 8-0.

Canyon attempted to make their comeback in the bottom of the fourth. After scoring on a bases loaded walk, the Cougars hit a two-run RBI double, cutting the San Marcos’ lead down to 8-3.

Canyon added another run on an RBI double to make it a 8-4 game.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Canyon continued to cut into the Rattler lead. The Cougars scored on an RBI triple before scoring again on a steal of home plate as Canyon made it a 8-6 game.

Going into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Cougars looked to complete the comeback. However, the Rattler defense kept Canyon off the scoreboard and came away with the win 8-6.

Pitcher Cole Wiatrek earned the win for the Rattlers, throwing 3.1 innings, allowing just three hits, one earned run, three walks and striking out three batters. Wilson earned the save, throwing 0.1 innings and getting the final out on a strikeout.

The Rattlers will play their final regular season game of the year at home when San Marcos faces off with Hays County rival Buda Johnson. Both the Rattlers and the Jaguars met in the district opener earlier in the season with San Marcos defeating Buda Johnson 3-1 on the road.

First pitch for San Marcos- Buda Johnson is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at San Marcos.
