HERITAGE ASSOCIATION OF SAN MARCOS
The Golden Legacy Tour of Homes approaching on Saturday, May 3, offers a rare experience: the return of the Barbee-Dake home’s interior for the first time in many years. Located in the heart of the Belvin Street Historic District, this 1906 masterpiece of architecture exudes timeless charm, fine craftsmanship and historic significance.
Originally built by J.H. Barbee, a prominent local figure involved in banking, real estate and cotton, the home has passed through the hands of many notable San Marcans — each leaving their mark. The current owners, the Dake family, have lovingly renovated the home since 2001, preserving its grace while restoring original details and adding rare architectural antiques, including stained, etched, and bev- eled glass, marble hearths and period light fixtures.
Highlights of the home include:
• A German hand-cut crystal chandelier in the grand foyer
• A petticoat mirror above the foyer fireplace, once used by ladies to check their hems before descending the staircase
• A 6-ft Vienna regulator clock (c. 1870)
• Exquisite stained-glass windows facing Belvin Street, believed to be Tiffany originals
• Custom pocket doors separating the formal living and dining areas
• A remarkable set of French-designed crystal chandeliers and sconces, assembled at the factory by artisan Thea
• A stunning hand-carved oak chair (c. 1775) and other antique furnishings from the 1800s Tour takers will enjoy this uncommon opportunity to step inside this historic home, where classic elegance meets welcoming warmth.
The tour begins at the Charles S. Cock House Museum, located at 400 East Hopkins Street, in Veramendi Plaza. There, guests can pick up tickets, enjoy a bake sale beginning at 9 a.m., and explore a special 50th anniversary display curated by local historian Linda Coker, highlighting the Heritage Association’s five decades of preservation efforts.
In addition, historian and author Rodney van Oudekerke will be onsite at the Cock House signing a limited supply of his acclaimed book, “Historic San Marcos: An Illustrated History,” a stunning collection of photos and stories about the city’s past.
Tickets are available online now for $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the tour at HeritageSanMarcos. org.
