Street maintenance planned for Dunbar, Victory Gardens neighborhoods

On May 5, the city of San Marcos will begin street maintenance work in the Dunbar and Victory Gardens neighborhoods. Crews will apply a high-performance pavement preservation treatment designed to extend the life of neighborhood streets and improve overall road quality. The maintenance work is expected to be complete May 24, weather permitting.

The treatment, often referred to as a pavement seal, protects roads from oxidation and moisture intrusion — two of the most common causes of asphalt deterioration. By applying this treatment now, the city is proactively preserving road surfaces, helping reduce the need for future repairs and improving the longterm driving experience for residents.

To help minimize disruption, the treatment will be applied on each affected street in two stages over two days, with daily street closures planned from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Streets will reopen each evening. The closures will not impact access for emergency vehicles.

Residents in the area are asked not to park within 50 feet of streets scheduled for treatment. Outdoor water use, including sprinklers and hoses, should be turned off 24 hours before, during, and 24 hours after the scheduled treatment. Any vehicles left parked in active treatment zones may be towed. A full list of affected streets and the maintenance schedule is available at sanmarcostx. gov/3039/Upcoming-Projects .

“We appreciate neighbors’ support as we complete this project to improve road conditions and enhance infrastructure in these areas,” San Marcos Public Works Assistant Director Adam Rossing said. “Please avoid using streets that are barricaded or marked as closed while crews are working. Driving over a freshly treated surface can damage both your vehicle and the street.”

San Marcos Public Works Director Sabas Avila said drivers are asked to avoid barricaded streets or streets marked “closed.”

“Driving over a freshly treated surface can damage both the vehicle and the street. Emergency vehicles will always have access if needed,” he said.
