Chamber externship program to bridge classroom and career

SAN MARCOS AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with San Marcos CISD Career & Technical Education and Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area, is hosting the Summer Teacher Externship Program designed to connect education with local industry. The initiative offers middle and high school teachers at Goodnight Middle School, Miller Middle School, and San Marcos High School the opportunity to spend five days at a local business this summer.

Through this program, educators will gain real- world insights into local industries, which they’ll use to develop career-connected lesson plans that bring relevance and practical applications to their students. Teachers will conduct interviews with employees, maintain a journal of their experience and return in the fall with fresh, community-driven content for their classrooms.

“This is a win-win for our schools and our business community,” Chamber President Page Michel said. “Educators gain firsthand knowledge of local careers and workplace expectations, while businesses help shape the future workforce by sharing their expertise with those who teach the next generation.”

The program is open to all teachers at the three participating campuses. Externships will take place over five, 4-hour days in June and July, scheduled at the convenience of the teacher and the hosting business. The experience will culminate with a final gathering where teachers and business partners come together to reflect, provide feedback and celebrate the program’s impact.

The Chamber is actively seeking local businesses from a variety of industries to host a teacher extern this summer. There is no cost to participate, and business hosts play a vital role in helping students understand what careers are possible right here in San Marcos.

“By opening their doors to an educator for just a few days, our local businesses can make a lasting impression — not just on one teacher but on hundreds of students,” said Michel.

Interested businesses or teachers can learn more by contacting the Chamber at chamber@sanmarcostexas. com or 512-393-- 5900.
