When my brother and I were kids growing up in a tiny East Texas town, we looked forward to a weekly pilgrimage to the big city of Beaumont, where we would check out our comic books at what was then the only comic book shop for 100 miles. While my brother enjoyed Marvel – Wolverine, Hawkeye, the X-men – my Dad was into classic DC. For me, it was Sandman, and I still have the entire series on my shelf to this day. Those weekly trips to the comic book store were formative for us, and this weekend, I’ll continue to show my love by visiting Dragon’s Lair San Marcos for its annual Free Comic Book Day event.
