KZSM: Support your local community radio station

We could use your help. As KZSM continues to grow, so does our need for volunteers. Our staff is as fluid as the population of San Marcos. Since launching the station in 2017, we have broadcast almost eighty thousand hours of music, news, information interviews and even some comedy in the mix all produced locally by our friends and neighbors. We owe a lot to the many radio hosts, both past and present, who have helped define who we are. However, it takes a lot more than a great lineup and wonderful hosts to make a radio station operate effectively.

This is where you come in. Whether you’re seeking volunteer hours for whatever reason or looking for an internship, come and talk to us. Some jobs may seem mundane, but if you like music, culture and interesting radio hosts, musicians and local celebrities, then KZSM can find a place for you. Young and old, students and retirees, are all welcome, especially if you have social media skills. I personally thought I’d achieved something when I finally got something posted on YouTube. Now, I’m told that there are more sites that we should look into. Yes, we really could use some help there.

Of course, those who may be interested in the more technical aspects of radio production are also welcome. From audio editing with software that is not too difficult to learn to operating a sound mixer, we will train you.

As a nonprofit organization, we depend on donations, sales of merchandise, grants and money raised from sponsored events. We’ve been fortunate enough to keep the lights on and maintain the equipment, but we could also use the assistance of grant writers, fundraisers and marketing people to help maintain everything we do.

Of course, if you have ever considered becoming a radio host of your own on-air program, this is your opportunity. Bring us your ideas, and we’ll help you create a show.

For more information on how to become involved in your true community radio station, please visit our website, KZSM.org, or visit our studio at 216 North Guadalupe. If you happen to be downtown around noon on Wednesdays or Thursdays, drop in on Rob Roark as he hosts “Open Door.” Or just listen in — our schedule is on the website. Tell your friends.

KZSM 104.1FM now broadcasting locally on the airwaves, KZSM.org broadcasting world-wide on the internet.
