LETTER TO THE EDITOR
I was born in Cuba; my family immigrated to the USA when I was five. I am now what is called a “naturalized citizen.”
The Cuban flag is red, white and blue. It is just like the Puerto Rican flag, just that the red and blue are inverted. When my family moved to Texas, my mother commented on how glad she was that the Texas flag reminded her of the Cuban flag. She ended up working at Texas Commerce Bank in Houston, and their logo was also similar.
Our Texas and national flags are red and blue and white.
When we make a big difference between the red and the blue, we forget the white.
This bright white is not just skin deep, it is the light that glows in our hearts and our eyes.
That light radiates as we look upon what we are proud of: beaming with pride.
The red and blue contrast; they shine at different vibrations.
But the white light, what refracts into rainbow colors, is what helps us see and know what we have in common.
We fly the same flag. When I look at the shape of a star, I see a center and 5 points, or 5 rays.
At the center of the star is pride, the love we Texans feel for our five treasures: 1. our vast Texas lands, where we grow our food and where we can see so far 2. our big Texas skies, where huge clouds can quickly form and disappear.
3. our abundant Texas water: our great rivers, lakes and aquifers 4. our Texas music – enriched by the diversity of its heritage 5. and the fifth type of wealth we share is our children, young Texans, our future.
From the center of our Lone Star, we love our Texas land, skies, water, music and children.
That love is where democracy comes from, because it is the light that exposes how we are all in the same boat, in the same state, where we protect and share these 5 natural riches.
From the center of the star, whether it is one of the 50 or the lone star, we look out on our neighbors and ask, how can we together protect our five riches?
