When thinking about what to get for our Moms this weekend to celebrate Mother’s Day, a good place to start is with their Love Language. As kids, my brother and I often attempted to make breakfast in bed for our Mom. It isn’t that she didn’t appreciate our efforts. After all, who doesn’t love eating scorched pancakes with sticky silverware while in pajamas? But my Mom’s house is clean — like Monica-from-Friends clean — and my brother and I did not meet her standards of cleanliness. As an adult, I’ve learned that our Mom is a Quality Time kind of gal. Our gifts include experiences we can share, like going out for her favorite meal or seeing a play. My son, now grown, has a similar approach. We enjoy combining all of the yearly gift-giving occasions into one giant gift. This year, we’re foregoing Christmas, birthdays and anniversaries to give each other a New Year’s cruise. We’ll be toasting Mother’s Day in December from the deck of a ship, a gift we’ll be looking forward to the whole year through.
