AGMC to ‘Shake the Rafters’ with Spring Concerts on May 17 & 18
Get ready to raise the roof this weekend as The Austin Gay Men’s Chorus shares songs of love, resilience and belonging at its spring concert, “Shake The Rafters.” The concert will be held at First Austin, 901 Trinity St., Saturday, May 17 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 18, at 4 p.m. Tickets start at $20 and are available at atxgmc. org.
“Shake the Rafters” promises an eclectic mix of beloved classics and contemporary hits, taking audiences on a journey of love, resilience and belonging.
“We’re super excited about this,” Thomas Rinn, Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education at Texas State University and Artistic Director of AGMC, said. “The good thing is that this came to us right as the community needed it. One of the things we began to talk about was not only is the chorus a place of belonging and diversity, but within the chorus there are so many different places from which we come, and we wanted to highlight that.”
The spring concert will feature music from timeless favorites such as The Beatles as well as the recent chart-topping, soul-stirring melodies of Sam Smith and Harry Styles. The chorus blends all of these varied pieces together with their own voices, creating something heartfelt and unique.
The concert will also incorporate a new TTBB (two tenor/two bass) arrangement of Inkosi Namandla by South African composer and conductor Michael Barret-Berg, adding notes of depth and cultural richness to the evening.
“This show is about connection and community,” Rinn said. “Through music, we create a space where everyone — performers and audience alike — can feel seen, heard and celebrated.”
Whether you are a longtime AGMC supporter or experiencing the magic of a choral performance for the first time, “Shake The Rafters” promises a memorable evening filled with joy, passion and a just touch of glitter.
