Group of pedestrians hit with vehicle on Square in early morning hours

CITY OF SAN MARCOS

A vehicle hit a group of pedestrians at the intersection of LBJ Drive and Hopkins Street just after 1 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, according to the city of San Marcos.

Four of the pedestrians were transported by ambulance to Ascension Seton Hays Hospital in Kyle, one was taken by ambulance to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in San Marcos, and another was transported by personal vehicle to Ascension Seton Hays. At this time, none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

The driver, Enrique Gutierrez-Field, 24, remained on scene, according to a city official. He was arrested and charged with six counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, four counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle and unlawful car- rying of a weapon.

An official with the city stated that just after 1:00 a.m., San Marcos Police received multiple 911 calls reporting a vehicle and pedestrians at the intersection of Hopkins Street and LBJ Drive.

“Upon arrival, officers determined multiple people were struck by a pickup truck in the intersection,” an official with the city stated. “According to the initial investigation, the truck was speeding on LBJ Drive before braking and striking a group of pedestrians in the crosswalk. A total of six individuals were injured in the incident.”

According to the city, the investigation remains active, and there is no further information available at this time.
