CITY OF SAN MARCOS
The city of San Marcos hosted its first workday as part of the Love Where You Live program on April 26. The event included city staff, volunteers, and non-profit organizations Mission Able and Operation Triage to support local homeowners in the Sunset Acres neighborhood.
Fifteen homes received help with yard cleanups, tree trimming and mowing. In total, volunteers removed 6,308 pounds of trash, 2,070 pounds of recyclable materials, four tires, a mattress, a box spring and a water cooler from the neighborhood to be properly disposed of.
“The Love Where You Live program is about more than beautification, it’s about empowering residents and building stronger connections within neighborhoods,” said San Marcos Community Enhancement Initiatives Manager Amy Thomaides. “Seeing city staff, volunteers and non-profit partners working side by side with residents was a powerful example of community collaboration in action.”
The Love Where You Live pilot program began in March with a kickoff event in Sunset Acres at Anita Reyes Park. The neighborhood-focused program will continue in the neighborhood throughout the year with beautification projects, educational workshops and other events. Staff will evaluate program effectiveness and participation before deciding whether to continue the program in additional neighborhoods.
The city encourages members of the community to volunteer their time and talents to support a wide range of city programs, projects, and events. Opportunities include: • Service on various city Boards and Commissions
• Volunteering at the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter
• Participating in cleanup events with Keep San Marcos Beautiful Some volunteer positions require specific qualifications or training. For a full list of volunteer opportunities available, visit sanmarcostx.gov/volun teer.
