COACH OF THE YEAR
In his first year at the helm, Cooper Haralson took over the Lady Rattler basketball program and pushed the team to the next level to heights not seen since the 1990s.
For being able to push the team over the hump, Haralson is this year’s San Marcos Daily Record High School Coach of the Year.
Prior to taking over as head coach, Haralson was the girls basketball assistant coach for the past two seasons.
While the Lady Rattlers were a consistent presence in the playoffs, the program was hitting the figurative glass ceiling, having not won a playoff game since 2015.
Haralson and his staff remained to focus on keeping the Lady Rattlers a defensive oriented team with guard heavy pressure combined with deadly transition offense.
The results were the Lady Rattlers tearing through non-district play and into district to end the regular season tied for second place with Cibolo Steele.
In the playoffs, the Rattlers were able to overcome limited numbers to defeat Laredo Alexander to win their first playoff game in over a decade. San Marcos followed up their performance with another playoff win in the Area round, beating Harlingen.
The Lady Rattlers peaked with a dramatic win over Austin Vandergrift in the Regional Semifinals.
Though the season came to an end at the hands of San Antonio Churchill, Haralson and his staff have the Lady Rattler program on the track to becoming a Central Texas powerhouse.
