TEAM OF THE YEAR
The Lady Rattlers entered the 2024-2025 season with high hopes after returning all five starters from last year’s team.
The end result was a playoff run that had not been seen since 1992 and the reason the Lady Rattlers Girls basketball team is the San Marcos Daily Record High School Team of the Year.
San Marcos started the season with a dominant win over rival New Braunfels before rattling off six straight wins.
After a little slump, the Lady Rattlers bounced back to win 10 straight games and crack several Top 25 polls in class 6A. Many of San Marcos’ wins in non-district play came against playoff teams in Davenport, Navarro, Pieper, Austin Bowie and Waco Midway.
San Marcos then made a statement in district play, defeating the state-ranked Cibolo Steele Knights 5447 and establishing the Lady Rattlers as one of the top teams in Region IV.
The Lady Rattlers finished district tied for second and had a 10-1 home record at the Snake Pit.
In the playoffs, San Marcos met Laredo Alexander in the Bi-District round where the Lady Rattlers won their first playoff game in over a decade. In the same week, San Marcos defeated Harlingen 61-45 to capture the Area championship and advance to the Regional Semifinals.
San Marcos then defeated Austin Vandergrift to advance to their first Regional championship since 1992. The Lady Rattlers fell to San Antonio Churchill in the Regional final, but with the team still maintaining the majority of their roster, San Marcos will still be a force to be reckoned with.
