I’m thrilled to head into a three day weekend, but the extra day off comes at the biggest cost. Memorial day honors service members who have died while serving their country. When visiting D.C. in high school the most impactful part for me was visiting the multiple war memorials and realizing the brutal cost of war. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was extra impactful since the design is a simple sleek black wall with the names of fallen soldiers etched in; on a bright day your reflection stares back at you, furthering the point that their sacrifice was for your freedom.
May is Military Appreciation month, so take time to reach out to friends and family who have served or who currently are serving and let them know you’re proud and appreciative.
On Monday, there will be an annual Memorial Day Ceremony hosted at the Hays County Veterans Memorial, located at 450 East Hopkins Street, starting at 10 a.m. Parking is limited, so come early to secure a space.
