City expands utility payment assistance program

CITY OF SAN MARCOS

The City of San Marcos has expanded its Utility Payment Assistance Program to enhance access to support for eligible residents facing financial challenges.

On April 15, the San Marcos City Council passed a resolution approving new partnerships, in addition to its ongoing collaboration with Community Action, Inc. of Central Texas. As part of this expansion, the city will now collaborate with Business & Community Lenders of Texas, Communities in Schools of Central Texas and the Salvation Army to administer $165,000 in funding allocated to support this initiative. The city of San Marcos contributed $120,000 to the program, with the remaining $45,000 coming from contributions made by utility customers who elect to add a donation in their bill payment to support the assistance fund.

Under the expanded program:

• Households may receive utility payment assistance up to four times a year.

• Households may earn an income at or below 250% of the federal poverty level, or households must include at least one member who is elderly, disabled, a veteran or a child under the age of five.

• The applicant must have an active SMTX Utilities account.

“Having additional partners on board allows us to enhance the support available to our residents facing utility hardship,” San Marcos Utilities Billing Man- ager Christine Avalos said. “This expansion means greater access and flexibility for households in need.”

To apply for assistance, San Marcos residents may submit an application through any of the four participating partners. Applications are available online in English and Spanish and will remain open until all program funding has been expended.
