La Sociedad Mutualista Cuauhtémoc, a community-rooted, volunteer-led nonprofit that has served San Marcos for more than 80 years, awarded 30 scholarships at San Marcos High School on May 19, 2025.

Liz Castañeda, Chairwoman of the Scholarship Committee, shared that the organization was founded on principles of mutual support, cultural pride and educational advancement. “One of the most meaningful ways we live out that mission is through our scholarship program,” she said.

This year, the organization awarded over $23,000 in scholarships to 36 high school seniors, with 30 of those students graduating from San Marcos High School.

“These students have shown tremendous dedication, resilience, and promise. We’re investing in their futures with the hope that they will not only pursue higher education, but finish strong, chase their dreams, and grow into leaders who give back to the community that raised them,” Castañeda said.

At La Sociedad Mutualista Cuauhtémoc, education is viewed not only as a path to personal achievement, but as a tool for lasting community transformation. “We know the journey won’t always be easy,” she added, “but we are confident these students have what it takes. We look forward to the day they return—not just as graduates, but as changemakers.”
