LETTER TO THE EDITOR
“What can we do?” This is the question I’ve been hearing — and asking myself — for months now. Is there anything we can do in response to what we see as an all-out assault on democracy in our country?
Several weeks ago, a small group of citizens met to address these questions. That conversation led to other conversations, and seemingly overnight, Step Up San Marcos was formed.
At the group’s organizational meeting in May, roughly 50 people attended to show their support. At the second meeting two weeks later, that number was doubled. Clearly, local residents are looking for a way to defend the rule of law, due process, the rights of immigrants, academic freedom, access to healthcare and Social Security, workers’ rights, the free press, and more.
The issues may be myriad, but the thread connecting them all is the need to defend democracy, to resist what seems to us like chaos and cruelty.
On May 30, approximately 130 members of Step Up San Marcos gathered downtown to demonstrate their resistance to the current administration. The organization is now looking toward its protest planned for June 14, No Kings Day.
This nation-wide event is an effort of Indivisible, which describes itself as “a grassroots movement of thousands of local . . . groups with a mission to elect progressive leaders, rebuild our democracy, and defeat the Trump agenda.” Step Up San Marcos, a non-partisan group committed to non-violent resistance, is an affiliate of this organization.
